What is an Arthroscopy?
Arthroscopy (also known as keyhole surgery) is used to inspect and treat problems inside a joint, e.g. for knee, ankle and shoulder injuries or to investigate the reasons for pain or swelling. The arthroscope (a narrow tube with a light source attached to a tiny video camera which transmits pictures back to a TV monitor) allows the doctor to look inside the area and examine it closely so that they can determine what is wrong.
What does an Arthroscopy involve?
During a private arthroscopy the surgeon will make two small incisions in the skin under local or general anaesthesia, e.g. on each side of the knee: one for the arthroscope, the other for a probe or a surgical instrument. For most patients under sixty, the procedure will require a one day stay in hospital and, in most cases, splints and crutches will not be needed and driving, walking and work can be resumed after a few days already.
