What is a Bone Scan?
A Densitometry Bone Scan (also called a DEXA-scan) is a special type of X-Ray used to measure the calcium content of the bone, usually in the lower back, hip or forearm area. This test is used to help a doctor investigate for osteoporosis and assess the risk of a fracture. It is fast and accurate and is preferred over a normal X-ray for detecting bone density because it is more sensitive and is far more reliable when it comes to detecting a recent bone fracture.
What does a Bone Scan involve?
For a private Bone Scan you will simply need to lie or sit still for a few minutes (no needles are involved), you can eat immediately before the test and remain fully dressed as long as your clothes have no metal elements. If you are being scanned for osteoporosis the lumbar spine and the hips will be examined as well as the forearm. The scan takes between ten and thirty minutes.
