What is a CT Scan?

A CT (computerised tomography) scanner is a specialised X-Ray machine which sends out several beams at different angles to produce a very detailed picture. Beams passing through less dense tissue, such as lungs, will be stronger than those passing through denser tissue such as bone. A computer processes these results and shows them as a two dimensional picture. The CT scanner was originally designed to take pictures of the brain but is now used to find tumours and abscesses anywhere in the body, and to assess lung disease or internal injuries.

What does a CT Scan involve?

During a private CT scan the patient lies on a bed with the body part to be examined placed in the opening of the doughnut shaped scanner. The bed then slowly moves backwards and forwards without the scanner touching the patient. Still some people might find it uncomfortable or claustrophobic to lie in the tunnel and they should let the medical staff know if this might cause a problem.

Usually for abdomen scans, patients will be asked not to eat for six hours before the test and will be given an aniseed flavoured dye to drink which makes the intestines easier to see. And for other tests a liquid dye may be injected into the veins to make internal organs and blood vessels contrast more clearly on the picture.
