What is an EEG Brain Scan?
An EEG (Electroencephalogram) records the brain's electrical impulses as recorded on a graph (or monitor) from electrodes placed on the scalp and a reading will help your doctor in making a diagnostic and treatment decision (e.g. for epilepsy). During the test you will be asked to perform different "activation procedures" which may evoke different activity than is seen during the resting awake state.
What does a Brain Scan involve?
During a private brain scan you will be asked to lie down on a couch after a cap or up to 25 individual electrodes are placed on you scalp where the disks are held in place by a paste. It will be necessary to lie still with eyes closed or one might be asked to do certain tasks during the recording, such as breathing deeply and rapidly for several minutes or look at a bright light. The test may last around one hour and is painless, with the minimum of discomfort.
