What is an MR Arthrogram?

MR (Magnetic Resonance) Arthrography is the most accurate method to give your physician information about your joints especially in the shoulders, elbows, hips and wrists. An MR Arthrogram is more accurate than an MRI scan alone as it uses a contrast agent. It also provides important additional information to rheumatologists to help them control arthritis.

What does an MR Arthrogram involve?

For a private MR Arthrogram your radiologist will inject, after local anaesthesia and under X-ray control, a small amount of contrast agent directly into the joint to be scanned. You will then be asked to move to the MRI room and lie on a bed which will slide into the scanner like on a conveyor belt.

MRI is completely painless but you might encounter some discomfort with driving immediately afterwards so make arrangements for that. While the scanner moves around it makes a clanking noise and the enclosed tunnel of the scanner might make some feel uncomfortable, so please let your doctor know. He will also advise you on which medications not to take before the test and will ask you if you might be pregnant or are breast-feeding. Duration of the test is approx. 1 1/4 hours.
