What is an Ultrasound Scan?
Ultrasound Scans are images produced when sound waves are directed into the body then reflected back to a scanner that measures them. Ultrasound scanning is used to diagnose and monitor conditions of internal organs in many parts of the body, including the kidneys, liver and heart. It is often used to examine the organs in a woman's pelvis - the uterus, Fallopian tubes and ovaries. The procedure is not dangerous, has no side effects and can safely be used during pregnancy.
What does an Ultrasound Scan involve?
For a private ultrasound scan with us you will be asked to lie on an examination couch. To help clarify the scan picture a special gel will be spread on the skin of the area to be examined. The ultrasound scanner, which looks like a small paint roller, will move over the body sending out sound waves through skin and muscles creating an image that appears on a TV screen. If female pelvic organs are under examination, a small probe will be gently inserted into the vagina, causing not more than a slight discomfort.
